Respite care, defined
If you're caring for a parent, spouse or friend, you already give a lot. Respite care gives some of that back: a few hours away, an overnight, or a longer stretch to rest, knowing your loved one is cared for safely at home. If you searched for "respite care near me," this is what it looks like with us.
Washington's Department of Social and Health Services describes respite as planned, short-term care (anywhere from a few hours to a few days) that lets a family caregiver step away while someone else looks after their loved one. It can happen at home, through an adult day program or at a residential facility. At SYNERGY HomeCare, that support comes to you: a trained, background-checked caregiver who gets to know your loved one and becomes a familiar face.
Having a professional on call makes caring for someone over the long haul easier to keep up. You get real time to rest, and the stress doesn't pile up the same way.
Relief that lets you keep going
When a caregiver steps in, the days don't all fall on you. Here's what that time can go toward.
- Rest and recharge: Step away from the daily routine and come back to it with more patience and energy. Breaks are part of what keeps caregiving sustainable.
- Keep work and life moving: Make it to the office, a standing appointment, your child's game or a long-overdue weekend away, knowing your loved one is cared for safely at home.
- Ease caregiver burnout: Regular relief reduces the physical and mental exhaustion that builds up over months of caregiving, so your own health doesn't slide while you look after theirs.
- Stay safe at home: A trained, background-checked caregiver steps in so your loved one stays in the home they know, with companionship, meals, mobility help and a watchful eye.
What respite care costs
Respite isn't priced differently from our other in-home care. You're billed for the hours a caregiver is in the home, at the same rate as a longer-term plan. Nationally, non-medical home care runs a median of $35 an hour, and Washington tends to price above that national figure. Because respite is usually a shorter, occasional commitment (a few hours a week, or one week a year), the actual dollar amount is almost always smaller than families expect.
If your loved one lives with dementia, plan for the higher end of that range; our memory care program is set up for that kind of specialized relief. The only way to know your real number is a conversation about what your family actually needs. A free, no-obligation in-home assessment gives you an honest estimate without any pressure.
Care that fits around your schedule
There's no single right way to use respite care. Use it for a one-time need or set up a routine you can count on, whatever helps you keep living your life across Bellevue and the greater Eastside.
- A few hours, here and there: Cover an errand, an appointment or simply an afternoon to yourself. Short, regular breaks add up.
- A standing weekly visit: A dependable weekly, biweekly or monthly rhythm you can plan your life around, with the same friendly caregiver each time.
- Overnight and extended relief: Travel, recover from your own surgery or take a real vacation. We can provide round-the-clock care while you're away.
- Weekend getaways: Hand off Friday evening and pick back up Monday morning, with the same caregiver providing overnight and daytime coverage the whole weekend.

Help paying for a break
Most families pay privately, but there is help set aside for family caregivers. Lifespan Respite Washington, run by Washington PAVE on a federal Administration for Community Living grant, awards vouchers of up to $1,000 per household each year. The conditions are specific: you have to be an unpaid caregiver providing 40 or more hours of care a week including supervision, live in Washington, be unable to afford respite on your own, and not already be receiving respite through another program. Submitting an application does not guarantee an award, because that depends on available funding and the priorities the funder sets.
Vouchers also have to be spent at an agency on the program's registered provider list, which rules out family, friends and independent caregivers. Our Bellevue office is on that list for King County, so a voucher you're awarded can be used with us. If you're already providing that much care, the application costs nothing but the time to fill it in.
If you're caring for a Veteran, the VA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers provides at least 30 days of respite care a year to enrolled family caregivers of an eligible Veteran.
Long-term care insurance and Medicaid's COPES waiver can also help cover in-home care, respite included. Our full guide to paying for care walks through each option. Reach out any time and we'll help you sort out what applies to your family.
Care that goes further
Respite care questions, answered
Still weighing it up? Call us any time: a real person will help you think it through.
What exactly is respite care?
Respite care is short-term, flexible in-home support that gives family caregivers a break. A professional caregiver steps in (for a few hours or several days) so you can rest, work or travel while your loved one is cared for safely at home.
Is it okay to take a break from caregiving?
Yes. Stepping away to recharge doesn't mean you're letting your loved one down. It's what lets you keep showing up with patience and energy, and respite care makes that break possible without the worry.
How flexible is the schedule?
Very. We support occasional few-hour visits, a steady weekly or monthly rhythm, and longer overnight or vacation coverage, whatever fits your life. There are no long-term contracts, so your plan flexes as your needs change.
What will the caregiver do while I'm away?
Whatever your loved one needs to stay safe and comfortable: companionship, meal prep, medication reminders, help with bathing, dressing and mobility, light housekeeping, and someone keeping an eye on things. We build the plan around your loved one before the first visit.
Which areas do you serve?
Our Bellevue office covers the Eastside: Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Mercer Island and Cottage Lake.
How much does respite care cost in Washington?
Respite care is billed the same way as our other in-home care (by the hour, built around exactly what your family needs), so there's no separate 'respite rate.' Washington tends to run higher than the national average. A free, no-obligation assessment gives you a real number instead of a guess.
Is there help paying for respite care in Washington?
Yes, though the main program has conditions worth knowing up front. Lifespan Respite Washington, run by Washington PAVE on a federal grant, awards vouchers of up to $1,000 per household a year to unpaid caregivers who provide 40 or more hours of care a week, live in Washington, cannot afford respite on their own, and are not already receiving it through another program. Applying does not guarantee an award, and a voucher can only be spent at an agency on the program's registered provider list, where our Bellevue office is listed. Family caregivers enrolled in the VA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers get at least 30 days of respite care a year for an eligible Veteran. Long-term care insurance and Medicaid's COPES waiver can help too.
Not sure whether it's time to bring in support? Persistent exhaustion, feeling resentful, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy are all signs it's time to ask for help, not signs you've failed.
